What next for Ukraine after claims of robbery?

Italy, the defending European champions, secured their place in Euro 2024 with a hard-fought goalless draw against Ukraine in Germany.

This crucial point allowed Italy to finish second in Group C, tied on 14 points with third-placed Ukraine but with a superior head-to-head record.

The tense match could have swung in either direction, with Ukraine, yet to beat Italy in their history, having strong claims for a stoppage-time penalty after Bryan Cristante’s challenge on Mykhailo Mudryk. Despite the appeal, no penalty was given.

Ukraine, while narrowly missing direct qualification, still has the chance to secure a spot in a fourth consecutive European Championship through the play-offs scheduled for March.

The play-off draw is set to take place on Thursday in Nyon. Italy, on the other hand, finished six points behind Group C winners England, who had previously sealed their qualification by defeating Luciano Spalletti’s side 3-1 at Wembley in October.

Italy, with their eighth consecutive Euro appearance, dominated possession and created more chances, but Ukraine demonstrated composure, particularly in their counter-attacks.

The qualification ensures Italy’s presence in the prestigious tournament as they aim to defend their European title.
