Jamaica’s manager eyes Greenwood for international return

Jamaica manager Heimir Hallgrimsson has expressed keen interest in bringing Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood back to international football.

Greenwood, who has one cap for England, is currently on loan at Getafe and is unlikely to be called up by Gareth Southgate for Euro 2024.

The 22-year-old joined Getafe after Manchester United decided to loan him out following the dropping of charges of attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm – all of which he denied – by the Crown Prosecution Service in February 2023.

Eligible to play for Jamaica through his father, Andrew, Greenwood has been the subject of reports suggesting the Jamaican Football Federation (JFF) is open to him representing Jamaica instead of England.

Under current FIFA rules, Greenwood could switch his international allegiance.

Speaking at a CONCACAF Nations League preview event in Dallas, Hallgrimsson confirmed discussions about Greenwood joining Jamaica, stating, “I would love to have him in my team.”

Despite links to clubs like Barcelona, Greenwood’s future remains uncertain. United’s co-owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, has indicated that the club will reassess Greenwood’s situation at the end of the season. “We will make a decision, correct,” Ratcliffe stated.

“All I can do is talk about the principle of how we will approach decisions like that. Is he the right type of footballer, are we happy with if is he a good person or not?”
