Andre Onana’s AFCON journey turned into a frustrating ordeal as the Cameroonian goalkeeper endured a nightmare 16-hour trip, only to be excluded from the squad entirely.
Despite reaching an agreement with Manchester United to stay in England until January 14, Onana boarded a private jet after the Tottenham game, attempting to make it in time for Cameroon’s opener against Guinea.
However, poor weather conditions diverted the plane to Abidjan, necessitating a three-hour car journey to Yamoussoukro.
Arriving just hours before kick-off, Onana discovered he wasn’t part of the squad selected by manager Rigobert Song.
The decision left the 27-year-old visibly upset, questioning the purpose of his journey, especially given the exclusive travel arrangements.
Shouting in frustration, he voiced his discontent: “If I wasn’t going to play or make the team, then why did I come here on a private jet?”
Footage captured Onana in conversation with former Liverpool forward El Hadji Diouf, who appeared to be consoling him amidst the disappointment.
