The heavyweight championship fight between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk called off

The highly anticipated undisputed world heavyweight championship fight between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk has been called off after negotiations failed to conclude.  The fight would have been among the biggest in the history of boxing, with both fighters holding all four major heavyweight world titles.

Fury stopped boxing for over two years, so his championships went vacant.  Fury defeated Wladimir Klitschko in 2015 to become the undisputed world champion.  Fury always held onto his belts inside the ring.  In 2018, he made an impressive comeback and controversially drew with Deontay Wilder.  The WBC championship was won by Fury against Wilder in a rematch, and he won it again in a thrilling trilogy bout in 2021.  Since then, he has retained the WBC championship.  Last year, he headlined two stadium bouts in London, winning decisions over Dereck Chisora and Dillian Whyte to retain his title.

Usyk, a former undisputed cruiserweight champion, has emerged as Fury’s primary challenger in the top heavyweight class.  He moved to heavyweight and defeated Anthony Joshua in 2021 to win the IBF, WBO, and WBA championships.  In August of last year, the Ukrainian successfully defended those belts by defeating Joshua again.
