Kenyan Star-Olunga Shines as Al Duhail Wins the Qatar Stars League

The Kenyan striker netted four goals as Al Duhail defeated Al Shamal at Doha’s Abdullah bin Khalifa Stadium.
Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga was on fire as Al Duhail SC claimed the Qatar Stars League (QSL) title with a 5-2 victory over Al Shamal on Monday.

Olunga scored four goals to aid his team to a massive win that assured they became league winners for the first time since 2020.

Meanwhile, Al Duhail took the lead in the seventh minute through Almoez Ali, who was assisted by Naam Tae-Hee.

Olunga scored Al Duhail’s second goal in the 21st minute after being set up by Mohammed Musa, putting him one step closer to reclaiming the Golden Boot.

He scored his second goal of the game from the penalty spot in the 32nd minute, before adding a third in the 35th minute, with Tae-Hee providing another assist.

Matias Nani scored from the penalty spot in the 48th minute to deny Olunga’s team a clean sheet.

The former Thika United player kept fighting and scored his fourth goal in the 52nd minute, with Bassam Al Rawi providing the assist.

Olunga increased his goal tally to 22 with four goals in this tense match, while his nearest Golden Boot competitor, Al Arabi’s Omar Al Somah, managed 19 goals.

This is the former Gor Mahia striker’s first league title with Al Duhail. Olunga’s star continues to shine in a different football zone after winning the title and retaining the Golden Boot.

He joined the Middle Eastern club in 2021 after making an impression in both Japan’s J2 and J1 Leagues. With 27 goals, he was instrumental in Kashiwa Reysol’s return to the J1 League.

He earned the Golden Boot in the J1 League, beating off Kashima Antlers’ Evaraldo, as he established himself as one of Reysol’s important international players.

He also won the Most Valuable Player award in his final season with the Japanese club, making him the first African to do so.

He added another feather to his cap in November 2021 when he won the AFC Champions League Golden Boot after scoring nine goals despite Al Duhail’s elimination from the group stage.
