After Portugal’s World Cup elimination, Fernando Santos resigned as the team’s head coach.
It comes after Portugal’s shocking 1-0 loss to Morocco in the Qatar Cup quarterfinals.
Cristiano Ronaldo was dropped after the group stage by Santos, who also guided Portugal to success at Euro 2016 and the first Nations League in 2018–19.In the last 16, Ronaldo’s replacement, Goncalo Ramos, scored a hat-trick in a 6-1 win over Switzerland.
Ronaldo came on as a substitute in the quarter-final match against Morocco but was unable to save them. Santos was repeatedly questioned about dropping Ronaldo, with the former Manchester United forward denying a report that he threatened to leave Qatar during an argument with his head coach.
Portugal will now begin the process of naming a new head coach, with Roma manager Jose Mourinho among the early favorites.
