Dominik Szoboszlai has joined Liverpool on a five-year, £60 million deal from RB Leipzig.
The Hungarian skipper surpasses Virgil van Dijk ($75 million), Alisson Becker ($65 million), and Darwin Nunez ($64 million original) to become the fourth-most expensive player in Anfield history. The No. 8 jersey made famous by illustrious former captain Steven Gerrard will be worn by him.
After learning that the 22-year-old’s contract with Bundesliga club Leipzig, which expired on June 30, contained a £60 million clause, the Reds moved swiftly to sign the player this week.
Before formally approaching Leipzig on Friday when the Reds made it known they planned to trigger the terms of the midfielder’s release, Liverpool officials met with Szboszlai’s representatives at the beginning of the week and had fruitful discussions with the Hungarian-based EM Sports agency.
The Score understands that Szboszlai made it known he was eager to work with Reds manager Jurgen Klopp despite Newcastle United’s desire and ability to provide him with Champions League football for the upcoming season.
The Magpies were then compelled to consider other options, opening the door for Liverpool to wrap up negotiations with Leipzig before he was granted permission on Friday night to fly to England for a medical on Saturday afternoon that was carried out at a facility in the northwest.
