Arsenal has made a statement of intent with the signing of Poland defender Jakub Kiwior from Spezia in a deal worth £20m. The 22-year-old, who has signed a four-and-a-half-year deal with the option of a further year at the Emirates Stadium, is the Gunners’ second signing this January after the arrival of Leandro Trossard from Brighton for £27m.
Kiwior moved to Serie A side Spezia from Slovakian outfit MSK Zilina in August 2021 and quickly established himself in the side, playing in a back three and impressing in the process. He won his first Poland cap in June last year and subsequently earned a place in his country’s World Cup squad, starting every match as they reached the last 16 before losing to France.
The defender will provide Mikel Arteta with a much-needed presence in the heart of the defense and will be a valuable asset as Arsenal looks to end a 20-year wait to win the Premier League title. The signing of Kiwior is a sign of intent from the Gunners, who are looking to bolster their squad and improve on their impressive start to the season.
