Conor Coady scored goals for both teams as Manchester United overcame Everton 3-1 at Old Trafford in the FA Cup third round.
A shocking error by David de Gea in the Manchester United goal allowed Coady to equalize for Frank Lampard’s team, negating Antony’s opening goal. But in the second half, the defender managed to beat his own goalkeeper.
Everton nearly scored a second equalizer, but Dominic Calvert-goal Lewin’s was called back for offside during the play. Instead, after Alejandro Garnacho was fouled, it was left to player of the game Marcus Rashford to secure the win with a stoppage-time penalty.
Erik ten Tag’s pursuit of trophies continues, as Everton’s attention returns to the Premier League’s relegation fight. United has now won seven straight games.
Christian Eriksen’s attempt narrowly missed the top corner of the goal, but Everton, buoyed by their equalizer, took control of the match and looked poised to duplicate the draw they managed to secure against Manchester City in their previous road game.
Lampard, though, did not have a good second half. First, during a challenge with Tyrell Malacia, Alex Iwobi turned his ankle and had to be carried off on a stretcher. The second by United followed. Seamus Coleman was overtaken by Rashford on the left, and Coady could only deflect the cross into his own goal.
Calvert-Lewin, who had just come on as a replacement, did brilliantly to divert Gray’s sharp corner into the goal from close range, but the winger had been slightly offside during the buildup. When Ben Godfrey hauled down Garnacho, there was no chance of a last-second equalizer. Rashford successfully effected a conversion. The victory was achieved.
