Ronaldo’s celebration leads to ban and fine

The Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF) has handed Cristiano Ronaldo a one-match ban and a fine of 30,000 Saudi Riyals (£6,300) for his actions during Al-Nassr’s recent victory against Al-Shabab.

Ronaldo’s celebration, which involved pumping his hand forward near his pelvic area, came after chants of “Messi” were heard from the crowd.

Despite not being captured by local broadcasts, the celebration was uploaded on social media, leading to a complaint by Al-Shabab and subsequent action by the SAFF.

Ronaldo denied any ‘disgraceful gesture’, but Al-Nassr opted not to appeal the ruling. In his defense, Ronaldo argued that his actions were common in European football and should not be interpreted negatively.

However, the SAFF upheld its decision, citing violation of Article 57-1 of the Disciplinary and Ethics Regulations, which prohibits actions that cause public excitement during a match.

The ban means Ronaldo will miss an upcoming match, underscoring the cultural differences in football celebrations between Europe and Saudi Arabia.

Despite being accustomed to pro-Messi chants in matches, Ronaldo likely did not expect such a reaction in Saudi Arabia, where he has become a prominent figure in the league.
