Deeney’s ban leaves Forest Green in a bind

Troy Deeney, the player-coach turned head coach at Forest Green, faces a four-match touchline ban and a £1,500 fine following an incident in the 2-1 defeat against Swindon on December 29.

The 35-year-old, who took charge of Forest Green in December, received a red card from referee Scott Simpson in the 85th minute for alleged “improper and/or abusive and/or threatening behaviour and/or language.”

The Football Association charged Deeney with two breaches of its rules on language and behaviour, both during and after the match.

This punishment adds to Forest Green’s recent challenges, as the club currently sits at the bottom of the League Two table, seven points away from safety.

The ban means Deeney will miss crucial matches against Gillingham, Accrington, Colchester, and Mansfield.

Despite his on-field success as a player, Deeney is facing a tough start to his managerial career, having failed to secure a victory in his first six matches in charge.
