The 2022 FIFA World Cup is scheduled to be the 22nd edition of the FIFA World Cup, the quadrennial international men’s football championship contested by the national teams of the member associations of FIFA. It is scheduled to take place in Qatar in 2022. This will be the first World Cup ever to be held in the Arab world and the first in a Muslim-majority country. Qatar was chosen as the host country in 2010, after a vote by the FIFA Executive Committee. As hosts, Qatar automatically qualified for the tournament. The allocation of slots for each confederation was discussed by FIFA’s Executive Committee. It was decided that the same allocation as used in the 2014 FIFA World Cup would be kept for the 2018 and 2022 tournaments, with the hosts of those tournaments receiving an additional slot. Therefore, a total of 14 slots were available for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
The 2022 World Cup will be the first to be held in winter, due to the extreme heat in Qatar in summer. It is scheduled to take place from 20 November to 18 December 2022. A total of 32 teams are scheduled to participate in the 2022 FIFA World Cup, including the host nation, Qatar. The number of teams is the same as in the 2018 FIFA World Cup. The format of the tournament is likely to be similar to the format used in the 2018 FIFA World Cup, with 32 teams split into eight groups of four, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the knockout stage. The 2022 FIFA World Cup is scheduled to be the first World Cup to use video assistant referees (VAR). The tournament will be held in eight stadiums in seven host cities: Doha, Al-Rayyan, Lusail, Umm Salal, Al Wakrah, Al Khor, and Qatar Foundation Stadium. The 2022 FIFA World Cup is sure to be a historic event and one that will be remembered for many years to come.
