Anthony is a small forward who can also play power forward. His ability to take over any game on the offensive end is regarded as his finest asset he shares the NBA record for the second most points scored in one quarter with 33 and holds the New York Knicks single-game franchise scoring record with 62. On offense, Anthony is known for being a prolific scorer with a range of deft offensive plays. Anthony entered the 2003 y NBA draft after only one season at Syracuse, and the Denver Nuggets selected him as the third overall choice. From 2004 until 2010, he was a player for Denver, where he guided the Nuggets to the playoffs each year and helped the team win two division titles.
Anthony guided the Nuggets to their first berth in a conference finals since 1985 in 2009. Days before the NBA trade deadline, he was transferred from the Denver Nuggets to the New York Knicks in 2011. Anthony established a Knicks single-game scoring record of 62 points and a Madison Square Garden single-game scoring record on January 24, 2014, against the Charlotte Bobcats.
Early Life
Anthony was born in Brooklyn’s Red Hook housing neighborhoods in the Big Apple.[8] His father, Carmelo Iriarte, was born to Puerto Rican parents in Manhattan. Iriarte was of African, Spanish, and Native American origin; he also had some Venezuelan connections. Mary Anthony, his mother, is of African American descent. Iriarte passed away from cancer when Anthony was just two years old. Anthony’s family relocated to Baltimore when he was eight years old.
Junior High
As a junior in high school, Anthony had a fruitful basketball career, nearly tripling both his points and rebounds per game to 23 and 10 . Anthony had a fantastic year, but all the attention distracted him, and he repeatedly missed courses, leading to suspensions. Due to his frail build and lack of muscle, pro scouts hardly even noticed him; they believed he was unprepared for the NBA’s physical requirements.
Division, I coach lined up to entice Anthony to a school on the East Coast following his junior year, including Syracuse and North Carolina. He made the decision to declare early and declare that he would attend Syracuse University before his senior year, in contrast to modern prep-to-pro athletes like Kevin Garnett, Jermaine O’Neal, Kobe Bryant, Tracy McGrady, or Amar’e Stoudemire.
AAU Baltimore Select team Anthony coached made it all the way to the Final Four of the Adidas Big Time Tournament in Las Vegas, Nevada, in the summer of 2001. Anthony, who played in the tournament together with Amar’e Stoudemire (who was already expected to be a potential lottery choice), drew the attention of the NBA by scoring 25.2 points per game.
Anthony took part in the USA Basketball Youth Development Festival and contributed to the East Team’s silver-medal victory. With 24 points per game and a 66 percent field goal percentage, he shared the tournament-scoring lead with LeBron James.[16] It was there that James and Anthony became friends.
College career
In his lone season at Syracuse University, Anthony averaged 22.2 points (16th in the NCAA and fourth in the Big East), 10.0 rebounds (19th in the NCAA and third in the Big East), and was first among NCAA Division I freshmen. In 2003, he assisted the Orangemen in winning their first NCAA tournament championship.
He was the team’s leader in scoring, grabbing rebounds, minutes played (36.4 per game), making field goals, and attempting and making free throws. Anthony broke an NCAA tournament record for most points by a freshman with a 33-point outburst against the University of Texas in the Final Four.
Anthony claimed that he had originally intended to stay at Syracuse for two to three seasons, but after completing his goals, he decided to forgo his undergraduate career and declare himself eligible for the 2003 NBA draft, with the approval of coach Jim Boeheim.
Professional Career
Denver Nuggets
The Denver Nuggets selected Anthony third overall in the 2003 NBA Draft, marking the beginning of Anthony’s NBA career. He was chosen after Darko Milii (second overall, Detroit Pistons) and LeBron James (first overall, Cleveland Cavaliers). On October 29, 2003, he played in his first NBA game during a home victory over the San Antonio Spurs, 80-72.
Anthony scored 30 points, moving up to second place among the youngest players in NBA history to do so. Since the ABA-NBA merger, a Nuggets rookie needed fewer games to reach 30 points in a game. With a 20-point performance in an 86-83 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies on February 9, 2004, Anthony became the third-youngest player in NBA history to achieve the 1,000-point milestone.
New York Knicks
Anthony and point guard Chauncey Billups were moved to the New York Knicks on February 22, 2011, as part of a larger deal that also included the Minnesota Timberwolves.
In honor of Earl Monroe and Dick McGuire, the Knicks retired Anthony’s previous number 15, therefore he opted to wear number 7 with the team. Anthony scored 27 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, and assisted in the Knicks’ 114-108 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks in his debut game with the team.
Following the addition of Anthony, the Knicks earned the sixth seed in the Eastern Conference and were paired against the Boston Celtics in the postseason. The Knicks experienced injury problems throughout the series as Amar’e Stoudemire and Billups were out. Anthony tied a playoff career-best with 42 points in game two of the NBA playoffs in Boston. He also had 17 rebounds and six assists, but the Knicks lost. In the opening round of the playoffs, the New York Knicks were defeated by the Boston Celtics in four games.
Anthony was given to the Thunder on September 25, 2017, along with future colleagues Enes Kanter, and Doug McDermott, and a 2018 second-round pick.[184] One postseason series was won by the Knicks during Anthony’s seven seasons with the team.
Oklahoma City Thunder
Anthony passed Allen Iverson on the NBA’s all-time scoring list on November 9, 2017, and rose to position 24 with just 12 points remaining. He scored 28 points overall throughout the contest. On November 26, 2017, Anthony passed Ray Allen for 23rd place on the NBA’s all-time scoring list. Anthony surpassed Vince Carter on December 11, 2017, to move up to 22nd all-time in NBA scoring.
Anthony reached 25,000 career points on January 27, 2018, becoming the 21st NBA player to do it. He has 1,693 playoff points in addition. Anthony scored 15 points on March 19, 2018, in a 132-125 victory over the Toronto Raptors to raise his career tally to 25,289, passing Reggie Miller to move up to the 19th spot.
Houston Rockets (2018–2019)
Anthony signed a one-year, $2.4 million veterans minimum contract with the Houston Rockets, who are coached by his former Knicks coach, Mike D’Antoni, on August 13, 2018.The Rockets’ general manager, Daryl Morey, said on November 15 that the organization was “parting ways” with Anthony but had not released him.
He appeared in ten games for Houston, starting twice, but was forced to miss the last three due to an alleged “illness.”During his absence, rookie Gary Clark saw a lot of playing time. Houston had lost seven of their first eleven games this season.
Portland Trail Blazers
The Portland Trail Blazers signed Anthony to a one-year, non-guaranteed contract on November 19, 2019. With his previous NBA game being on November 8, 2018, Anthony made his Blazers debut on November 19 in a 115-104 away defeat to the New Orleans Pelicans; he started and had 10 points, 4 rebounds, and 1 block in 24 minutes of play. Anthony had a season-high 25 points and 8 rebounds in a 117-94 road win over the Chicago Bulls on November 25. During the same game, Anthony passed Alex English for 18th place on the NBA’s all-time scoring list.
Los Angeles Lakers
Anthony agreed to terms with the Los Angeles Lakers on August 6, 2021. He made his Lakers debut on October 19, scoring nine points, four rebounds, and two assists in a 121-114 loss to the Golden State Warriors.
On October 24, Anthony scored 28 points in a 121-118 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies, passing Moses Malone for ninth place on the NBA’s all-time career scoring record. He became the ninth player in NBA history to achieve 28,000 points on January 28, 2022, when he scored 19 points in a 117-114 loss to the Charlotte Hornets.
Personal life
Anthony married Alani “La La” Vazquez in 2004. Kiyan Carmelo Anthony, their son, was born on March 7, 2007. On July 10, 2010, Michael Eric Dyson married Anthony and La La in front of 320 guests at Cipriani’s in New York City. VH1 filmed the ceremony for the couple’s reality show, La La’s Full Court Wedding. Anthony currently resides in Portland, Oregon. In 2020, he sold his New York property.
Anthony has two brothers named Robert and Wilford, as well as a half-sister named Daphne. Michelle, his other sister, died in 2010. Mary, his mother, is African American, and Carmelo Iriarte, his father, is Puerto Rican.
The “banana boat crew” consists of Anthony, LeBron James, Chris Paul, and Dwyane Wade. The four have been friends since they were teenagers and have always vacationed together.
