Manchester City star Kalvin Phillips has admitted that he has been closely following the progress of his former club, Leeds United, and remains hopeful that they can secure their Premier League status amid a challenging relegation battle.
Phillips, who was a key part of Leeds’ successful fight for survival on the final day of last season, expressed his support for the team as they face another tough battle to avoid relegation this year.
Despite having moved to Manchester City last summer and winning the Premier League title with his new club, Phillips still keeps an eye on his boyhood side’s journey.
“I have been keeping an eye on Leeds all season, to be honest,” Phillips revealed in an interview with Sky Sports after Manchester City’s victory over Chelsea.
“Obviously, it wasn’t a great result today, but I just pray to God they get a good result in the last game and hopefully keep that great club in the Premier League.”
Although Manchester City had already secured the top spot in the league prior to their match against Chelsea, manager Pep Guardiola made several changes to the starting lineup, including giving Phillips his first Premier League start for the club. The team secured a 1-0 win thanks to a goal from Julian Alvarez.
Philips statement
Reflecting on his opportunity to play, Phillips expressed his happiness and gratitude, stating, “It was a great feeling when I came in this morning and the manager told me I was playing.
“I was just happy, to be honest. I was happy because we won the league the night before, and I knew that there might be a chance I could play, so I just went on relaxed and enjoyed every moment.”
Phillips has faced injury challenges this season and has had limited playing time for Manchester City.
However, he acknowledged the support of his teammates, particularly Kyle Walker, in helping him stay motivated and confident.
Despite the difficulties, he remained optimistic and grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the team’s success.
In the early kick-off of the day, Leeds United took an early lead against West Ham United through Rodrigo’s goal.
However, West Ham staged a comeback and secured a 3-1 victory, leaving Leeds still in a precarious position as they approach the final game of the season.
As the Premier League season nears its conclusion, the hopes and concerns for both Manchester City and Leeds United continue to captivate football fans, with Phillips eagerly awaiting Leeds’ final match and the outcome of their battle for survival.
