Barcelona placed third behind Bayern Munich and Inter Milan, and United’s inability to win Group E has put them up against a squad that was eliminated from the Champions League.
Beginning with their European Cup Winners’ Cup match in 1984, United and Barcelona have a long history of competing against one another in European competition.
In order to take first position in Group E, United needed to defeat Real Sociedad by two goals or more on Thursday in Spain. However, they managed to win 1-0, setting up a two-legged match against one of the eight third-place teams that were eliminated from the Champions League.
