Pep Guardiola is confident that his Manchester City players can win the Premier League title without needing Churchillian inspiration.
The Citizens moved to the top of the table for the first time since February 17 after a tough 2-1 victory over Fulham at Craven Cottage.
Guardiola’s men were made to work hard for the three points by the resilient Fulham side, who matched the in-form champions throughout the game.
Despite Erling Haaland’s 50th goal of the season from the penalty spot after just three minutes, Fulham found a leveller a little over 10 minutes later through Carlos Vinicius.
However, it was Julian Alvarez’s touch of class that restored City’s advantage in the first half, superbly curling home what proved to be the winner.
Guardiola praised his side’s ability to defend properly, which he believes is the biggest difference from the past.
Although he acknowledged that the grass was dry for both teams, making it difficult to get rhythm, he saw no sign of a drop in performance from his players.
When asked about the need for a leader and statesman of Churchill’s stature during City’s quest to achieve an unprecedented treble, Guardiola responded that his players don’t need a leader.

“They know what they have to do,” he said. Guardiola was also aware of the record set by Aston Villa’s Tom ‘Pongo’ Waring, who scored exactly 50 goals during the 1930/31 campaign – the last player to score 50 goals in a single season for a club at the top of the English pyramid.
He joked that Winston Churchill was not even Prime Minister the last time the record was set, indicating how long ago it was.
It was the 15th day this season that City ended the day in first position, with Arsenal having occupied the spot for 247 days.
Guardiola, however, is not concerned about the team’s ability to handle the pressure of being at the top of the table. “This group of players don’t need a leader. They know what they have to do,” he said.
City’s win over Fulham was a hard-fought victory, but it showed that they are capable of grinding out results when needed.
