Greenwood’s future hangs in the balance: What’s next for the striker?

Mason Greenwood has reportedly confided in close friends that he no longer thinks he will play for Manchester United again, following the CPS dropping all criminal charges against him in February.

The charges included attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault causing actual bodily harm. United’s first-team squad is said to be divided over his potential return to the club, and the situation remains uncertain.

Since Greenwood’s arrest last year, he has been suspended by United and will not be allowed to return to the Carrington training ground or participate in any fixtures until the club has completed its own investigation.

The Red Devils have released a statement in which they acknowledge the CPS’s decision to drop all charges against the forward and say that they will conduct their own process before deciding on next steps.

Despite being cleared of all charges, Greenwood remains suspended by the club, and there is no indication of how long the investigation could take or what outcome it could lead to.

It has been reported that United manager Erik ten Hag informed Greenwood after the charges were dropped that any decision on his future would be taken by the club and not the management team.

The 21-year-old forward had said he was relieved that the matter was now over and expressed gratitude for the support he had received from family, loved ones, and friends.

Where will Greenwood play next season?

However, The Sun reports that Greenwood believes he will have to move abroad to continue his career, having told friends that he no longer believes he will play for United again.

Greenwood signed a contract with Manchester United that runs until the summer of 2025.

He has scored 35 goals in 129 appearances for the club since making his senior debut in March 2019 and earned one England cap in 2020.

The future of this young player remains in the balance, and it remains to be seen how the club will proceed.
