After 20 months in charge, Crystal Palace has fired Patrick Vieira.
The Eagles are in 12th in the Premier League standings, just three points above the relegation zone as the Arsenal legend departs Selhurst Park. The replacement for Vieira and the referee for Sunday’s Premier League match at the Emirates have not yet been announced by Palace.
The early frontrunners for the position are former Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl and ex-Leeds manager Jesse Marsch, but a permanent replacement is unlikely to be in place before the Arsenal encounter. The day after St. Patrick’s Day, on March 17, Vieira’s dismissal was revealed.
In July 2021, Vieira was chosen by Palace to succeed Roy Hodgson, the former manager of England. He led the Eagles to a 12th-place finish in the Premier League and the FA Cup semifinal, where they lost to Chelsea. His first season at Selhurst Park was a success.
With a 2-1 triumph at London rivals West Ham, Palace won five of their first 13 Premier League games this season. Yet, since the World Cup in Qatar, they have only won one game. Vieira’s last 11 league games in command did not result in a victory.
Currently, Crystal Palace are terribly out of shape. They are still winless in 2023, going winless for a 12-game stretch. In each of their last four games, they have come up empty-handed.
As a result, they are only three points above the relegation zone. And the atmosphere within the team is rapidly turning nasty, particularly following their most recent loss to rivals Brighton .
Palace owner Steve Parish is reportedly “extremely disappointed” by their recent performance, according to the Guardian. He is consequently “seriously considering” firing Vieira.
He was scheduled to lead his club to Arsenal on Sunday. He was once a star player for Arsenal.
