Arsenal have been Eliminated from the Europa League by losing against Sporting Fc in Penalties

After an intense Europa League last-16 match between Arsenal and Sporting ended in a 1-1 draw on the night and a 3-3 tie overall, the Portuguese team advanced to the quarterfinals thanks to a save from Gabriel Martinelli’s penalty effort.

The second leg was the most exciting part of the match even before the visitors prevailed in the shootout, 5-3.

At the opposite end, Trossard, Martinelli, and Gabriel all put England goalkeeper Ramsdale through his paces.

As Arsenal’s European tour comes to a conclusion, Arteta will be worried about how it might affect their Premier League campaign.

The 120 minutes of grueling play and injuries to their key defenders were not the best preparation for their upcoming league match against Crystal Palace in three days.

Leandro Trossard’s attempt in overtime was deflected onto the post before Sporting goalkeeper Antonio Adan again produced a spectacular save to deny Gabriel’s header. After Manuel Ugarte of the visitors was being dismissed, the Arsenal defender was then stopped at the goal line by Ousmane Diomande in the 118th minute.

Nuno Santos’ successful penalty kick gave Sporting the advantage in the end, though. Mikel Arteta’s team must devote all of their attention to domestic issues with Sunday’s visit from Crystal Palace because they currently lead the Premier League by five points.
